Exchanges: "Think Link"
Link exchanges are a crucial part of today's website
marketing campaigns.
A link exchange is an 'interchange' or 'swapping' of links from your
website to your link exchange partner's
website and vice-versa. For instance, if you have a real estate website
and you wish to generate more traffic to it, you might exchange links
with your mortgage partner's website and the local chamber of commerce
website among others.

Why are they so important? Because search engines find them useful in calculating the popularity of one website vs. another. The goal is to attain
'link popularity'. According to SearchEngineWatch.com, "link popularity refers to the number and quality
of the incoming links that are pointing to your site. These other sites consider your site important enough to link to. So, in the (search) engine's
view, your site is considered important as well."
In general, the solution to achieving 'link popularity' is to reciprocate links. You would think that "the more links you have, the better",
but this is not the case. It is the 'quality' of the links and how they are employed that is more important. Running a link exchange campaign can
even severely hurt your website's popularity if conducted improperly because the search engines do not take being 'tricked' with spurious techniques
lightly.
